Facebook CTO resigns – East Bay Times

Posted: 23 Sep 2021 03:48 AM PDT

By Kurt Wagner | Bloomberg

Facebook chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer, a 13-year veteran who oversees the social network’s work in artificial intelligence, virtual reality and blockchain, will step down next year.

Another longtime Facebook executive, Andrew Bosworth, will take over as CTO, according to an internal post from CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday. Schroepfer’s move marks the most significant departure from the company in years and follows the recent exits of several other senior executives.

Known as “Schrep”, Schroepfer joined Facebook in 2008 and has been CTO since 2013, reporting to Zuckerberg. He sits atop several of Facebook’s most ambitious organizations, including groups that the social network depends on for its future growth, such as engineering, infrastructure, augmented and virtual reality, and Unity blockchain and finance. Her office is next to Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook headquarters.

Schroepfer’s most central role has been his oversight of Facebook’s AI organization, which he helped build. This group is developing the technology that Facebook uses to automatically find and remove content that violates its policies, such as nudity, hate speech and graphic violence.

Menlo Park-based Facebook is under increasing pressure to improve the AI systems it uses to monitor user content, fight fake news, and remove harassing or offensive messages. This pressure has increased following a series of reports in the Wall Street Journal last week that found evidence describing the company’s difficulties in dealing with issues such as Covid-19 misinformation and trafficking. human being.

With billions of global users to serve, Facebook executives have indicated that AI technology is the best way to control posts on such a large scale. The technology is far from perfect, and Facebook also uses thousands of human content moderators to monitor posts on its apps.

Schroepfer, 46, will continue to advise the company in a new role of part-time senior fellow, helping to recruit technical talent and develop the company’s artificial intelligence initiatives.

"This new position will also create more space for me to devote time to my family and personal philanthropic efforts while remaining deeply connected to the business," Schroepfer wrote in an internal post.

Facebook shares slipped in extended trading in the wake of the news, falling about 0.5%. The stock had fallen 4% to its lowest level in two months at $ 343.21 in regular trading after warning that Apple Inc.’s new limits on mobile app data collection would hold back the results of the third trimester.

Prior to joining Facebook, Schroepfer worked for web browser maker Mozilla. A graduate of Stanford University, he has become one of Facebook’s most visible executives, often speaking at events and at the annual Facebook Developer Conference. He represented the social network at a hearing before the British Parliament to discuss the Cambridge Analytica data sharing scandal in 2018.

He is also highly publicized internally, appearing frequently at company-wide meetings, and is the executive sponsor of the internal "Women @ Facebook" employee group.

Schroepfer’s departure means a step forward for Bosworth, 39, who is also one of the company’s longest-serving executives. He has held several positions since joining Facebook after meeting Zuckerberg while the CEO was still a student, most notably heading the company’s advertising organization. For the past several years, Bosworth has led Facebook Reality Labs, the company’s AR and VR efforts, including its plans to develop a virtual metaverse.

What is the Chelsea Prisoner of Love matchmaker website and social media?

Posted: 22 Sep 2021 08:56 PM PDT

Discovery + challenges the popular WE tv Love after lockdown reality TV series with their own prison reality show titled Prisoner of love. The main difference between the two shows is that Prisoner of love centers around a matchmaker who pairs up the couples featured on the show – a sort of Love after lockdown meets Millionaire matchmaker.

For Prisoner of love, Patti Stanger Prison is Chelsea Holmes, a 42-year-old former schoolteacher from Panama City, Florida. Chelsea reveals in the first episode that her interest in romance in prison started innocently enough. "I’ve been writing to penpals for years," she explains, "and it occurred to me: all these people who are single, stuck in jail, with no one to talk to – I have thought, “Wait a minute. It could certainly be a business.

Chelsea therefore began pairing inmates with pen pals and potential love interests as a side activity to her teaching job. Eventually, she will literally quit her day job as a teacher to pursue the twinning in prison full time.

What is Chelsea’s company name and website?

The site for Prisoner of love matchmaker Chelsea Holmes is prisonloveandfriendship.com. As you might have guessed, his company name is Prison Love and Friendship.

How much does it cost for Chelsea’s matchmaking services? According to the website, the current price for a “custom match” is only $ 25. Here’s what you get for the $ 25:

Personalized matchmaking includes a quiz, a phone conversation with Chelsea or a team, and ongoing involvement in finding your perfect match. We strive to make the experience easy and to always be available to our customers. Let us help you today.

I guess the one-on-one matchmaking service is for people who are not behind bars and looking to date someone who is incarcerated. So what about the prisoners? Do they have to pay to be included in the pool of potential matches? It seems they do.

Here’s part of the prisonloveandfriendship.com sales pitch:

The friendships that your friend or family member develops while incarcerated, with the outside world, could be among the most meaningful and positive relationships. With more than a million views on our professional sites per month, their new correspondent is waiting for them. Start their new friendship today for just $ 30.00

All $ 30.00 penpal ads include posting to the website as well as all social platforms. For social media posts only, the price is $ 15.00

The website ad includes up to a 300 word intro, multiple photos, and contact information. Social media posts will only include photos or videograms and contact information.

Information needed for announcement upon submission: full name, DOC / inmate number, prison and state name, current conviction / sentence length / release date, type of communication

The website currently has 20 penpal profiles of potential prisoners. Unfortunately for guys who are looking for inmate love, all of the profiles on the website are male.

Love and Friendship prison on social networks

The Chelsea company is present on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Here are the links:

Love and friendship in prison on TikTok: @prisonloveandfriendship

If you’re curious about what a matchmaking ad looks like, here are the two most recent videos posted to the TikTok account with Bryceton and Curtis:

CLICK HERE to watch the profile video of Devin, who appeared in the first season of Prisoner of Love. (He was New York student Isa’s boyfriend.)

Much like the Prison Love and Friendship website, most social media profiles are male inmates. For example, if you scroll through the last 100 TikTok posts, you won’t see a single woman. You need to scroll to a post shared on May 7 to find the first inmate. I guess the reason for the disparity is a combination of things, including the male: female prison population ratio, the popularity of prison dating sites for inmates, and Chelsea’s preference for men. (These last two are just speculation on my part.)

I’ll end this article with another inmate profile that I think could be the inspiration for a brand new reality series called Love after lockdown after braking the Amish:

@prisonloveandfriendship

## ohio ## amish ## friendsonly ## corns ## prisontiktok ## lookingforfriends ## oxygen ## killercouples ## amishtiktok

These countries have the most people on Twitter

Posted: 22 Sep 2021 04:00 PM PDT

Twitter users are not particularly representative of global demographics.

For example, a 2019 Pew Research Center study found that far more men than women use the site, while the 22% of American adults on Twitter are “younger, better educated, and more likely to be Democrats. than [the] General public.”

And other studies indicate that Twitter users are not evenly distributed around the world, with the social media platform being much more popular in some countries than others.

Digital marketing expert Brian Dean said News week: "According to Twitter statements to the SEC, the United States has the most Twitter users in the world.

"Perhaps surprisingly, Japan comes in second in terms of active users.

“It’s also interesting that many emerging markets (including Brazil, Turkey, Mexico and Indonesia) are extremely active on Twitter.”

The countries named below have the most people on Twitter, according to Flourish.Stud

io data.

20. Malaysia (3.86 million)

19. Argentina (4.96 million)

Argentina has 45 million inhabitants.

A study published by Data Portal suggests that “the number of internet users in Argentina increased by 1.2 million (+ 3.5%) between 2020 and 2021”, while “the number of social media users increased by two million” during the same period.

18. Germany (5.25 million)

Over 75% of Germans (over 14) use the internet in one way or another, according to one Corporate culture of the profile.

The study adds that in the country of 83 million people, “more than 75% of them are registered on at least one social media network and spend about a quarter of all their time online on these networks”.

17. South Korea (5.7 million)

Internet penetration in the East Asian country of 51.7 million people stood at 97% in January 2021, which would be the highest rate of any Asian country outside of the Middle East. -East.

But as social media platforms like Twitter thrive in South Korea, the country has developed its own set of platforms that have proven to be equally or more popular in recent years.

16. Australia (6.23 million)

A report from Genroe updated in July 2021 describes Australians as “reasonably avid social media consumers”.

The same study also states: "Between January 2020 and July 2020, Twitter fell into the top 50 most visited sites in Australia," adding that the social media platform does not have "the same influence in Australia as in other geographical areas ".

15. Thailand (6.55 million)

A WikiGender report describes this Southeast Asian country with a population approaching 70 million as “home to one of the youngest online markets in the world.”

The same report states that Twitter is “one of the important social networks that has had a huge impact on Thai culture.”

14. Philippines (6.63 million)

The archipelagic Southeast Asian country with a population of over 108 million is apparently infatuated with social media sites such as Twitter, with the number of users of these platforms increasing by 16 million (+ 22% ) between 2020 and 2021.

A 2021 report by We are social Says: “Filipinos spend an average of four hours and 15 minutes per day on social media, topping the global usage rankings for the 6th year in a row.”

13. Canada (6.88 million)

Research from Ryerson University suggests that there are key differences between the use of social media in Canada and the United States.

For example, Twitter is proportionately more popular in Canada than in the United States, while levels of smartphone use to access social media north of the border are significantly lower.

12. France (7.45 million)

Internet penetration in France, which has 67 million inhabitants, is one of the highest in Europe, with nearly 80% of people connected.

Twitter is now considered the second most popular social media platform in France, behind Facebook alone, as of August 2021.

Russia, with a population of 144 million, has the largest number of internet users of any country in Europe, with 109.6 million users as of June 2017. Twitter is just the sixth most popular social networking site.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law in July 2021 requiring foreign social media platforms to open offices in the country, in a move seen as an attempt to gain greater control over Big Tech.

8. Indonesia (10.65 million)

There were 202.6 million internet users in Indonesia in January 2021, in a country of over 270 million people.

That number included around 170 million social media users in the Southeast Asian country at the start of 2021, a number that has grown by 10 million in the previous twelve months.

7. India (11.45 million)

India is one of the top three internet markets in the world, with nearly 700 million users, but Twitter usage has reportedly seen a marginal decline over the past year.

Twitter has continually clashed with the Indian government over the content of its platform, with an Indian court ruling in July 2021 describing the platform as “in complete non-compliance” with the country’s new laws on information technology.

6. Turkey (11.8 million)

Twitter is considered the fourth most popular social media platform in the country of 82 million people.

Turkish opposition politicians and activists recently expressed dismay at the government’s plans to put increasing pressure on social media sites such as Twitter.

The study adds: “On average, the 15- to 32-year-old age group has seven social media profiles – the main ones being Facebook, where 96 percent have a profile, followed by YouTube (79 percent), Google+ ( 67 percent) and Twitter (64 percent). “

4. Saudi Arabia (14.35 million)

A 2021 report from Global Media Insight describes the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as “a social media powerhouse.”

The country of 35 million people has 33.58 million active internet users, nearly 80% of which are active on social media sites, with Twitter being the fourth most popular platform.

3. United Kingdom (16.7 million)

The country with a population of 68.05 million has an internet penetration of 96% as of January 2021.

A 2021 YouGov poll places Twitter third on the list of the most popular social media platforms in the UK, after Facebook and Instagram.

2. Japan (45.75 million)

For a country associated with cutting-edge technology, Japan occupies a surprisingly modest position when it comes to social media time, with 51 minutes well below the global average of two hours and 25 minutes.

However, this behavior is changing. Twitter’s vice president for Asia Pacific and Latin America Shailesh Rao said in 2021: "We’ve seen more than quintuple usage in a very short period of time.

1. United States (59.35 million)

A 2021 Pew Research Center report states that about 70% of Americans use social media to “connect with each other, engage with topical content, share information and be entertained.”

U.S. giant Cisco invests in Israeli streaming software company Qwilt

Posted: 22 Sep 2021 07:51 AM PDT

Cisco Systems Inc., a U.S. maker of networking software and hardware, led a $ 70 million investment in Israeli streaming software company Qwilt at a valuation of $ 800 million, the company said on Wednesday.

Qwilt said the Series E funds will help fuel the company’s ambitions to build one of the world’s largest and most successful content delivery networks (CDNs) with global service providers. CDNs are a group of geographically distributed servers that work together to provide fast content delivery.

Founded in 2010, Qwilt has built what it calls an Open Edge Cloud solution, running on a standard compute and storage infrastructure, which supports applications such as Open Caching, 4K Live Streaming, AR, VR, and IoT. These solutions help deliver high-quality streaming experiences to consumers on a large scale, the company said, and meet the huge demand for streaming video.

Qwilt has been working with Cisco since last year to offer a new service based on Open Caching, with BT, the UK’s leading telecommunications and networking provider, as its flagship customer.

Open Caching “federates the content delivery infrastructure deployed deep within service provider networks, into a global CDN with open APIs for content publishers” and “is designed to help service providers easily deploy a edge CDN footprint, giving them more control over content flows, "the company noted in 2020 when the partnership was first announced.

Qwilt said it is also working with major cable, telecommunications and mobile service providers to improve their streaming quality offerings.

“This investment signals an inflection point for Qwilt and Cisco to expand our shared vision to help service providers use advanced computing to deliver digital content experiences from their own networks,” said Alon Maor, co-founder and CEO of Qwilt. "We are ready to step up our efforts by recruiting new talent, intensifying our marketing efforts and putting R&D into action for large-scale growth. “

"Streaming is the primary goal for most service providers to generate revenue today, and Cisco is making this investment to demonstrate our commitment to helping customers monetize their edge cloud infrastructure with a solution that improves quality. of service and reliability, "said Jonathan Davidson, vice president and general manager of Cisco’s large-scale infrastructure group.

"We’re seeing great momentum with customers around the world who believe in the powerful combination of Qwilt and Cisco to take them to the next level with an innovative content delivery platform for streaming and on-demand services, from new applications and more, "he added. .

Qwilt employs more than 150 people in its offices in Israel, the United States, Europe and Australia. Its investors include Accel Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures and Innovation Endeavors, co-founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Earlier this year, Cisco announced the acquisition of Israeli-based Sedona Systems, a manufacturer of communications technology. The deal was Cisco’s 16th acquisition in Israel, according to Oren Sagi, chief executive of Cisco Israel. In 2020, he acquired Tel Aviv-based startup Portshift, a maker of application security solutions.

The American firm has R&D centers in Caesarea, Netanya and Tel Aviv.

Social networking site Tumblr “Post Plus” subscription functionality now available in the United States

Posted: 22 Sep 2021 04:05 AM PDT

Social networking site Tumblr is extending the beta of its Post Plus subscription feature to all users in the United States.

Post Plus, similar to Twitter’s Super Follows, allows creators to designate some of their posts as reserved for paid subscribers. Tumblr is planning a full launch of the feature later in the fall.

Tumblr has made some changes since the limited beta that started in July, reports The edge.

The creators of Post Plus can now directly block subscribers. Creators previously had to contact Tumblr support if they wanted to block a follower, which raised concerns among users.

There is now an option to set a subscription price at $ 1.99 per month, in addition to the existing options at $ 3.99, $ 5.99, or $ 9.99.

Creators can go back and pay for existing content, rather than just monetizing new posts, according to report

Tumblr is also removing the blue plus badge, similar to a Twitter verified badge, which appeared next to creator usernames.

Tumblr said several of the beta tweaks were made in response to user feedback. As you might expect, many Tumblr users weren’t happy with Post Plus’s initial announcement.

Some users even staged a logout protest, specifically citing concerns about the legality of monetizing fan work, though those concerns likely stem from misunderstandings over copyright law.

Forty leading organizations, including 11 of the 20 largest dairy companies in the world, among the first to support the new global climate initiative “Pathways to Dairy Net Zero”

Posted: 22 Sep 2021 12:00 AM PDT

ROSEMONT, Illinois – (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – Pathways to Dairy Net Zero, a revolutionary new climate initiative, launches today during Climate Week and just ahead of the United Nations Food Systems Summit. Forty leading organizations, including 11 of the world’s 20 largest dairy companies, have already declared their support for the effort. Collectively, these supports represent about 30 percent of total milk production in the world.

The new climate initiative demonstrates the global dairy sector’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions while continuing to produce nutritious food for six billion people and provide livelihoods for one billion people.

"Pathways to Dairy Net Zero will accelerate climate efforts already underway and lead to other actions needed to reduce emissions from dairy products over the coming decades. The dairy sector has a lot to offer in leading this transition, "said Hein Schumacher, CEO of Royal FrieslandCampina and President of Global Dairy Platform.

"Mengniu is proud to join the global dairy sector by uniting behind this effort, the first of its kind in agriculture, because we must all do our part to address this global climate challenge," said Minfang (Jeffrey) Lu, Managing Director and Executive Director of China Mengniu Dairy Company.

The initiative is based on six key principles:

  1. Mitigation. Continue to improve production and process efficiency to further reduce the intensity of GHG emissions from milk and dairy products.
  2. Elimination of greenhouse gases. Improve production practices that protect carbon sinks (soils, forests, grass, peatlands) and complement natural ecosystems.
  3. Avoidance and adaptation. Improve practices such as feed, manure, fertilizer and energy management.
  4. Inlays and offsets. Identify and implement alternative and credible reduction options.
  5. Measurement and monitoring. Measure greenhouse gas emissions to plan for mitigation and monitor progress.
  6. Global support. Promote the global initiative and underline the climate ambition of the dairy sector.

Identification and clarification of plausible mitigation options

A multi-stakeholder group of organizations, including the global dairy sector and representatives of the scientific and research communities, work together to develop scientific methodologies, tools and pathways that work for every dairy system.

Research is underway to identify where positive action on climate change is possible. The study is led by Scotland’s Rural College and New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Center, research institutes from two of the 65 member countries of the Global Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Alliance, backed by data and analyzes by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Initial research revealed that the dairy sector already has the means to reduce a significant proportion of emissions – up to 40 percent in some systems – by improving productivity and resource use efficiency.1

Researchers are identifying plausible GHG mitigation pathways for different dairy systems globally, particularly methane reduction. The latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)2 reaffirmed that the main GHG challenge is the reduction of carbon dioxide, which remains in the atmosphere for centuries. The report also identified reductions of methane, a potent but short-lived climate pollutant that only lasts about 12 years in the atmosphere, as an immediate opportunity to combat global warming.
